Deadlines

• Freshers' Hall dinner (Sat 3 Oct) — RSVP by 9am Wed 23 September. Two days away. Miss it and you eat your first night alone.
• Matriculation Dinner (Tue 6 Oct) — RSVP by 9am Mon 28 September. You will be mid-flight/jetlagged around then; do it before you leave.
• Maths Workbook — Prof. Robert Mullins (robert.mullins@cl.cam.ac.uk), your Director of Studies, requires it completed before arrival. Not optional, not marked, but supervisors assume it.
• Visa share code — submit online now via Student Services. You land before 3 Oct, so you also do the in-person passport check at F2a Chapel Court rather than at the Registration Centre.
• Hard-copy certificates — Admissions must physically see your Singapore certificates during matriculation. Pack the originals in hand luggage.

Already settled

• Flight — SQ322, 27 Sep 2026, SIN–LHR (PNR F9TLCM), booked through Safe2Travel on IMDA's account. Keep the physical boarding pass for the claim.
• Room — Cripps D 06, single ensuite. Residence permitted from Sat 26 Sep; £29.69/night for any night before 29 Sep.
• Early arrival — arriving before 3 Oct means collecting your University card at the Forecourt Porters' Lodge, not at Registration.
• Freshers' app — the St John's Guidebook (builder.guidebook.com/g/j2j2026) carries the full Orientation Timetable. It is the authority for everything college-side; this page is not.

Do these now

• Register for membership. £20 lifetime or £12 for a year, via membership.cumsa.org. You can only sign up once you have your @cam address — you have zy417@cam.ac.uk, so this is doable today.
• Join the Telegram community and follow @cumsa_ — this is where the freshers' day tour, departure-group coordination and event sign-ups are actually announced, not the website.
• Find your CUMSA family. Family sign-ups closed 1 Sep; if you missed it, message the committee — freshers get placed late every year.
• Catch the freshers' day tour, run in Cambridge shortly before Michaelmas starts. You are in Cambridge from 27 Sep, so you can make it.
• Ski Trip 2026 — Flaine, France, 5–12 Dec, £572 all-in (rental, lift pass, transport, accommodation). Sign-ups opened 7 Sep, 7pm SGT, on Telegram and it sells out: if you want a place, message the committee now rather than waiting for Freshers' Fair. It is the one CUMSA event that collides with nothing academic — Full Term ends 4 Dec.
• CUMSA has no email list. Nothing from them will reach this inbox — every announcement is Telegram or @cumsa_ on Instagram. That is the single failure mode for Singaporean freshers.

The annual cycle

• Orientation — late Aug, in Singapore (2026: 28–30 Aug, CSC Changi). Already gone for your year.
• KopiTalks — Sept, joint with Oxford's OUMSSA; ministers and panelists on Singapore policy.
• Annual Formal Dinner — October, in a college hall. The signature event; pairs freshers with seniors.
• Bridgemas Carnival — November. Games, food stalls, carols, charity fundraiser.
• Ski Trip — Flaine, France, 5–12 Dec 2026, £572. Largest annual event; 100 went to La Plagne last year and it books out.
• Singapore Festival, Asian Food Fair, Oxbridge Games — Lent/Easter.
• Garden Party — June, Churchill College.

The one you are missing

• UCCPS \u2014 University of Cambridge Competitive Programming Society. Termly lecture series, contests, IOI medallists through to complete beginners, past lectures on YouTube. For a Codeforces Grandmaster this is the single highest-value society in Cambridge and it appears on no careers list. Discord invite lives on uccps.soc.srcf.net; the Michaelmas 2026 termcard is not up yet \u2014 the site still shows Michaelmas 2025.
• CUCaTS \u2014 the main student-led CS and tech society, and the channel through which the quant firms actually reach Cambridge CS students. Their public calendar feed is at cucats.org/events/calendar.ics \u2014 subscribe to it.
• CyberSoc \u2014 security. Discord plus the soc-cyber sympa list; they also publish a public Google Calendar. 2025 Michaelmas ran a Dutch-police ransomware talk and a beginners' Hack The Box workshop.

Finance-side, all student-run

• CUATS \u2014 Algorithmic Trading Society. 1,650 members, ~45 events a year. Weekly Sunday coding sessions (hands-on, in person), industry workshops with trading simulations and market-making games, a Fireside Chat series with current students back from quant internships, Insight Days \u2014 site visits to London quant firms \u2014 and Fed Day socials where members live-trade the eight FOMC announcements. The CUATS Challenge coding competition runs from early November to the start of Lent. Quant Conference 6 March; black-tie Gala at the Cambridge Union 16 June, where members are seated with industry sponsors. Mailing list soc-cuats. This is your primary one.
• CUFIS + CamSIF \u2014 you are already on both lists. Fortnightly speakers, a Spring Week webinar series, CamSIF's live portfolio, and they co-run the UK Student Finance Summit (9 Oct, London). Applications close 11 Oct; you applied 4 Sep.
• CUMSA \u2014 Telegram only. \u00a320 lifetime or \u00a312 for the year; register once you have your cam.ac.uk address, or at the Freshers' Fair booth.

International Students' Association

• Runs International Freshers Week \u2014 thirteen events, 27 September to 4 October, almost all free, listed publicly on the Cambridge SU What's On page and nowhere else you would have looked.
• Two college formals, two punting sessions, two brunches, a scavenger race, a pub crawl and two club nights. Tickets are booked through the SU site with a Raven login.
• Contact isa-chair@cambridgesu.co.uk, Instagram @isa.cambridge. They also publish a Cambridge University International Freshers Guide behind the SU login.
• Book these the moment your Raven account works. Free events with capacity limits fill first.

Dates to put in the diary

• Wed 28 Oct — University Quants Fair. Register on Handshake now; it fills.
• Thu 29 – Fri 30 Oct — CST Supporters' Club Recruitment Fair, William Gates Building, 11:30–16:00. Tech-heavy, far less crowded than the central fairs.
• Mon 12 – Tue 13 Oct — Finance & Consultancy Fair. Worth one afternoon, mostly banks.
• Tue 3 Nov — Careers with Maths.
• Fri 9 Oct — Career26 UK Student Finance Summit, Kensington Events Centre, London. 900 students, 40+ speakers, has a quant finance track. CUFIS code CUFISSummitCareer26. It is a Friday of week 1 — skippable if lectures bite.
• Sun 11 Oct, 23:59 — CamSIF analyst applications close (rolling). You already submitted on 4 Sep, so this is the decision window, not an action.
• All Michaelmas — CUATS talks and the Optiver–Cambridge Trading Academy; join CUATS in week 1. CUFIS/CamSIF run speaker events roughly fortnightly — you are already on their list.

The blunt version

• Summer 2027 internships are closed to you. Optiver, Citadel and most desks require sophomore/penultimate standing. On a three-year BA your penultimate year is 2027–28, so your real cycle is Summer 2028, applications opening ~July 2027.
• What is open now: first-year discovery/insight programmes (Jane Street, Citadel Discover, HRT, SIG). These are the only pipeline entry a first-year gets, and they are the thing to apply for this Michaelmas.
• Timing matters more than polish. In the current cycle roughly 70% of Citadel offers were signed by mid-October and Jane Street's interview slots filled by late October. Applying in November is applying to a closed class — that discipline applies to your 2027 round too.
• Your CF Grandmaster / Hacker Cup record is the asset, not your CV layout. Keep competing through Michaelmas — it is the single thing that gets you past a first-year screen.
• IMDA bond reality check: overseas internships are fine, but the bond is served in Singapore in a tech role. Worth deciding before you spend two years optimising for a London desk.

Admin

• UKVI account + eVisa. No physical BRP any more — log in and confirm your eVisa is visible and correct before you board. Visa £558, IHS £776/yr.
• NS exit permit. Required for NSmen staying out of Singapore for 1 year or more in a single trip. Apply via ns.gov.sg; needs proof of overseas study.
• Vaccinations + hardcopy records. Meningitis ACWY, MMR, flu, chickenpox, COVID. Bring the paper booklet — GP registration may ask for it. ACWY can also be done at the Cambridge GP.
• Hardcopy exam certificates. St John's verifies results in person at matriculation. People forget these every year.
• HSBC UK account opened from Singapore if you want banking live on landing — otherwise budget 1–3 weeks after arrival.
• IMDA scholar admin — arrival reporting, insurance, term-report obligations. Check the Scholar's Handbook before you leave.

Set by the Computer Lab

• Maths workbook — required. The NST Mathematics Workbook, all exercises, before you arrive. Isaac Physics hosts it online. Trivial for you; do it anyway, it is checked.
• Python mini-course to the end of the Collections section. October opens with a Python bootcamp focused on writing good Python, not basics.
• UNIX terminal comfort. Non-issue for you, but the bootcamp assumes it.
• Join the CST Google Chat space — you must sign in with @cam.ac.uk, not a personal account. Best pre-term source of course-level information.

Pack / don't pack

• Bring: one formal outfit (matriculation, formals, CUMSA dinner), warm layers and a genuinely waterproof coat, adapters, medication with prescriptions.
• Don't bring: bedding, kitchenware, bike, monitor, desk lamp. Buy at Aldi/Lidl/Tesco/TK Maxx, on Amazon (6 months free Prime with a student account), or from graduating seniors — CUMSA and college listservs are full of them in early October.
• Flights: SQ gives 40kg on the student allowance if you ask; BA is 23kg in economy. That difference is roughly one whole suitcase.
• Gown: Churchill Gowns, £35, sold at the Registration Centre on Sat 3 Oct. Buy it there — you need it three days later for matriculation, and town outfitters cost roughly double.

Day one

• Porters' Lodge — collect room keys. This is also where post, parcels and every future problem goes.
• Tutorial Office — collect your CamCard (University ID, library access, door access, meal charging).
• Set up eduroam, not UniOfCam — the latter logs you out every two days.
• Coach from Heathrow: National Express runs direct to Cambridge Parkside. Train means the Tube plus a change, with luggage. Take the coach.

First week

• Register with a GP near your accommodation. Consultations free, prescriptions not. Do it before you are ill, not after.
• Open a UK bank account. Take passport, offer letter, and a College letter confirming your address. Monzo/Starling in parallel as a same-day fallback.
• UK SIM — check coverage at your actual staircase before committing to a provider.
• Buy a bike at the Freshers' Fair discount. Cambridge is a bike city and a 12-minute cycle to the William Gates Building is the difference between making 9am lectures and not.
• Meet your College parents and your Director of Studies. The DoS relationship is the one that matters academically.

The genuine norms

• Almost no academic prep. For most UK courses pre-reading is optional and widely ignored. Computer Science is an exception — the maths workbook and Python course are set work, so treat them as compulsory.
• Arrive a few days early and travel. Once an eight-week term starts you will not leave Cambridge. A few days in London or Edinburgh before arrival day is the standard move, and the only window you get until December.
• Kit out on arrival, not at home. Nobody ships bedding. It is cheaper and lighter to buy in the first 48 hours.
• Squashes. Society taster sessions in week 1 — free food, no commitment. Attend widely, then quit most of them by week 3. Attempting five societies through a Cambridge term is how people fail their first year.
• Novice rowing. Colleges recruit complete beginners in October for Fairbairns in December. It is the default way to make friends outside your subject, and it eats six mornings a week. Decide deliberately.

Where Cambridge differs

• Freshers' Week is short. Three or four days, not a week of nightlife. Work starts in week 1, properly, immediately.
• Matriculation is a real ceremony — photograph, service, dinner, gown. It is not optional and it is not a formality.
• The term is eight weeks. Everything is compressed; there is no reading week. Nothing you postpone in Michaelmas gets done in Michaelmas.
• Supervisions, not lectures, are the course. Two students to one academic, weekly, with work marked. Lectures are optional in practice; supervisions are not.
• Part IA has weekly ticks — practical assignments signed off in the Computer Lab. Miss them and they accumulate.
